Dr. Hiroyuki Yoshikawa (Director-General, Center for Research and Development Strategy, Japan Science and Technology Agency) delivers a lecture on the responsibility of the scientific community to society, not just in terms of conducting high quality research, but also in communicating the research effectively. Dr. Yoshikawa begins his lecture by explaining the position of scientists within society. While noting that scientists are working within companies, governments and universities, Dr. Yoshikawa explained that scientific societies and networks provide an opportunity for free discussion and exchange of ideas.
