In advance of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) in Sendai, Japan, on 14–18 March 2015, UNU-IAS has published a series of new working papers presenting research on the Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident of March 11, 2011. The papers explore the transition between the immediate response to the disasters and the longer-term recovery process, considering challenges such as displacement, employment, emergency health assistance, housing, trust-building and the needs of vulnerable people, .
These papers are outputs of the UNU-IAS Fukushima Global Communication programme (FGC), a research initiative examining impacts of the March 2011 disasters on people and society, the challenges of the recovery process in Fukushima, and issues of risk and information provision. They will be presented and discussed in an FGC side event at the WCDRR on 16 March.
